I’m having my reception in a VFW hall. They don’t allow candles which was a big part of my decorating idea! I’ve been looking at the string lights (like Christmas lights) and the battery operated lanterns. If I do the string lights then I have to buy a bunch of extension cords that might look tacky. But then the paper lanterns only last a certain amount of hours and I don’t know if any of my bridal party wants to go around the room to light them when it gets dark. I also looked at the flameless votives but those get costly and I’d need a bunch. I’m on a pretty tight budget. I really like the lanterns. Should I just do the lanterns? I’m having a July wedding. So it probably won’t be dark til late. They’d probably last long enough. Just don’t know who’d be willing to go around and turn all of them on. I did figure I’d need about 20 – 30 of them.

I’m no lighting expert, but I wonder if you might consider using those walkway lights that are solar powered. If the VFW hall will grow dark with the night, perhaps the walkway lights might add a romantic glow to the room.
Hey – what do I know?!
Good luck with your plans.

I would go with the lanterns but make yourself sure to test them all out prior to the wedding. I used to use those in my patio & got some that didn’t even turn on. Also, remember that they aren’t going to give off as much light as the others because they’re surrounded with paper so it’s more of an illumination than actual lighting.

You’re right, in July it won’t get dark until late. I’m sure there’s a young relative or friend who would love to have a job to do at the reception when they get bored/antsy. Let him/her light the lanterns when you give the thumbs up. Wait ’til as late as possible and they should last as long as you need them.
